What to Expect From Your First Driving Lesson
What to Expect From Your First Driving Lesson
Choosing a driving instructor is an important step on your journey to becoming a driver. Your instructor will help you build confidence by teaching you the skills and knowledge you need to become a safe driver. Your first Driving Lessons will typically last one and a half hours. Your instructor will collect you from your home, school or other suitable pick-up location and then drive to a quieter, often residential area, where your lessons will take place. During the first lesson, you’ll spend the majority of the time learning how to operate your car.
During your driving lessons, your instructor will explain all the vehicle’s instruments and controls. They’ll also teach you about the different traffic rules and regulations. You’ll learn the importance of maintaining a safe speed limit and how to properly use your mirrors. Your instructor will also show you how to maneuver the car in a variety of situations, including parallel parking, driving up and down hills, and navigating intersections.
After your first few lessons, you should practice driving with parents or another licensed driver, and then return to your instructor for additional training. Everyone learns at a different pace, and your instructor will be happy to work with you at whatever rate is most comfortable for you.
You can choose to take your driving lessons in a manual or automatic vehicle. The vast majority of our students take their driving lessons in manual cars. Manual cars require a lot of clutch work and shifting, which can be overwhelming for new drivers. An automatic car, on the other hand, removes this complexity. This allows learners to focus on steering, braking, and building their confidence and road readiness.
Your instructor will help you understand and follow the rules of the road, such as how to handle speeding, driving in special zones, and driving with children or pets. You’ll also learn about the penalties for breaking the rules, which can range from a simple warning from an officer to losing your license.
You’ll learn about different traffic conditions, like heavy traffic and bad weather. You’ll also learn the importance of checking your blind spots before changing lanes, merging or turning, and making sure that you’re able to see other vehicles in your rearview mirrors before backing out of a driveway.
The DMV recommends that all learners complete a minimum of 50 hours of supervised practice driving before taking their test, with 15 of those hours spent at night and 10 of those hours spent in moderate to heavy traffic. All the practice you get with your Brooklyn driving instructor will count towards this requirement.
Intensive driving courses are a great way to prepare for your test and develop the skills you need to be a confident driver. However, it’s important to remember that driving is a complex skill and, even with an intensive course, you will still need a regular schedule of weekly lessons. This will allow you to reinforce the skills learned in each lesson and minimize the risk of forgetting them before your test.
